Return to Player, or RTP, is the single figure that tells you how much of every dollar wagered on a pokie is paid back to players over millions of spins. In Australia, the regulated minimum sits at 85% for land-based machines, though most venues in NSW, Victoria and Queensland run titles well above that. Online, the numbers climb higher still, with many releases sitting between 96% and 97.5%. For more details, visit casinos that accept google pay.
That gap matters. A pokie at 96.5% gives back roughly eleven and a half cents more per dollar than one at 85%. Over a thousand spins at $1 each, that is a difference of around $115 in expected returns. Choosing high-RTP titles does not guarantee a win on any given session, but it does mean the house edge is working against you far more slowly.
How RTP Works and Why It Varies
RTP is calculated over the entire life cycle of a pokie, not per session. A machine with 97% RTP can easily drain a $200 bankroll in ten minutes, then pay a jackpot to the next player. The figure is a long-run average, verified by independent testing agencies that simulate billions of spins.
Volatility sits alongside RTP as the second key metric. Low-volatility pokies pay smaller amounts more often, while high-volatility games can go fifty or more spins without a win before landing something substantial. Two pokies can share identical RTP and feel completely different to play.
Australian players should also note that the same game often ships with several RTP configurations. A title listed at 96.2% on one platform may appear at 94% elsewhere. Always check the paytable or help screen before spinning.

| Rank | Pokie | RTP | Volatility |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mega Joker | 99.00% | Medium |
| 2 | Jackpot 6000 | 98.90% | Medium |
| 3 | 1429 Uncharted Seas | 98.60% | Low |
| 4 | Marching Legions | 98.12% | High |
| 5 | Blood Suckers | 98.00% | Low |
| 6 | Kings of Chicago | 97.80% | Low |
| 7 | Rainbow Riches | 97.30% | Medium |
| 8 | Book of 99 | 97.00% | High |
| 9 | Jack Hammer 2 | 96.99% | Medium |
| 10 | Immortal Romance | 96.86% | Medium |
Mega Joker tops the pile thanks to a skill-based Supermeter mode that, when played optimally, pushes returns to 99%. Jackpot 6000 follows closely, with a gamble feature that lets players double or nothing on any win. 1429 Uncharted Seas pairs its 98.6% RTP with gentle volatility, making it a favourite for players who prefer longer, steadier sessions.
At the other end of the spectrum, Marching Legions and Book of 99 combine high RTP with high volatility, meaning bigger swings but a fairer long-term return. Immortal Romance remains one of the most played titles in Australia, and its 96.86% figure sits comfortably above the online average of roughly 96%.
Practical Tips for Choosing High-RTP Pokies
Check the paytable first. Reputable platforms publish RTP under the game info tab, and titles below 95% should generally be avoided if you have a choice.
Match volatility to your bankroll. A $100 balance suits low-volatility titles like Blood Suckers, while a $500-plus bankroll can absorb the swings of Marching Legions. Set a session limit in AUD before you start and treat RTP as a guide, not a promise.
